"Cast me not off in the time of old age, forsake me not when my strength faileth"
Psalm 71:9

Walking Worthy of God

INTRODUCTION

  1. I Thess 2:12 - That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory
    1. That ye would walk - Many have knowledge but fail to initiate action (to walk).
    2. Is our walk a worthy walk
      1. Worthy to be called unto His kingdom
        1. Currently seen in an obscured view.
      2. Worthy to be called unto His glory
        1. Eternal glory and happiness.
    3. First step must be one of salvation "in Christ" - The Wedding Garment
      1. Turn on the Switch Illustration - Automobile drivers sometimes step on the starter before they turn on the switch. The result is nothing - the engine does not go. One can keep this up until one is tired out, but there will never be power to move the car a single inch. There are many people who try to live a Christian life without having been born again. They go through many motions, but the miracle contact of the new life in Christ has not been made. (Not a reformation of old, but a transformation)
    4. Once salvation is secure, we can now look at our daily walk as Christian believers. Here are some helps for a successful Christian walk.

II) Walking will involve exertion, be prepared to work!

  1. Phil 3:14 - I press toward the mark (a runner in a race) for the prize (crown or garland) of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
    1. We must press toward a particular mark
      1. Press - Pursing after with great difficulty/to live Christ like!
      2. Training and discipline
    2. There is a prize of a high calling
      1. To Him who sits on high (God)
    3. Our calling is achieved through the person of Christ Jesus
      1. The special grace and favor of God

III) We must walk as Christ did

  1. Eph 5:2 - And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savior.
    1. It is the Lord Jesus that is the great master of love: It is His school (His own church) that is the school of love. His disciples are the disciples of love, and His family must be the family of love (Matthew Henry).
    2. We must walk with Christ-like love
      1. One that give of ourselves to others. (Friend, family, enemy)
      2. A sacrificial love unto God - Paul was willing to be spent!
      1. To become a sweet-smelling savor - Bringing great delight

IV) We must be transformed from darkness unto light

  1. Eph 5:8 - For ye were sometimes darkness, but now ye are light in the Lord: walk as children of light.
    1. Our Past State - That of total darkness, stumbling and fumbling
    2. Our Current State - Ye are Light - Jesus stated "I am the Light"
  2. Other Biblical mentions of Light
    1. 1Jn 1:7 - Walk in the light as he is in the light (fellowship with Christians)
    2. 1Jn 2:10 - Abide in the light (achieved by loving your brothers & sisters)
    3. Eph 5:8 - ..but now ye are light in the Lord (our source): walk as children of light.

CONCLUSION:

  1. Be sure of your standing
  2. Walk with the power of God, through Christ
    1. Be the light God hath chosen you to be.
      1. Matt 5:14 - Ye are the light of the world, a city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.

Let your light so shine before men.
