David's Charge to Solomon
I Chronicles 28:20
And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the Lord God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord.
INTRO:
David (in his old age) is here giving instructions to Israel, but specifically to Solomon. The ark of the covenant along with other things of the God have been residing within the tabernacle. The tabernacle was a temporary and movable sanctuary for the very nomadic people of Israel.
Here David is speaking to his Son, Solomon and giving him the enormous task of building a permanent dwelling place (Temple) for Jehovah God to dwell within. David wanted to undertake this tasking by himself but was disqualified to do so because of the great amount of blood that was shed by David.
- The N.T. Speaks of our bodies as being the Temple in which the Holy Spirit resides. If we could but capture a fraction of the holiness, reverence and qualities that went into the building of Solomon's Temple, we would be in awe.
- David has a lot of encouraging words for Solomon and the advice that David shares with his son which can also be applied to today's Christian as they attempt to serve the Lord in whatever undertaking or call they attempt to accomplish.
I) Be Strong
- When one thinks of strength in the scriptures, Samson pops into ones mind. Though Samson had great physical strength, he was only strong when God was with him. This is evidenced by his final demise, allowing a woman to bring him into bondage, when Jehovah God had departed from the presence of Samson. NT Christians have some great passages of scripture that can enlighten us as to where our true strengths lie.
- Strength is achieved through faith in Christ (RM 4:20)
- Strength is fond in the "in the power of his might" of our God (Eph 6:10)
- Strength is found in the Grace of God (II Tim 2:1)
- Strength is found in our weakness (Heb 11:34)
- Strength is found in The Holy Spirit (Lk 1:80)
II) And of Good Courage
- Courageous men in the Bible were always men who took a stand for what was right. Daniel refused to be defiled. Shadrach and company refused to bow to a pagan Idol. For these courageous men of God they were made courageous because they knew a God who was sovereign in all matters and they simply placed their trust in them.
- Courage comes from a heart strengthened by God (Ps 31:24)
- Courage strengthens us to do what is right
- Putting away abominable Idols (II Chron 15:8)
- To behave ourselves valiantly (I Chron 19:13)
- Courage stems with the knowledge of God's companionship (Josh 1:9)
- Courage comes from God's promise that He will never forsake us (Duet 31:6)
III) Do It
Strength and courage are necessary for the final step that would need to be taken. This final step of course is that of action DO IT! David had the strength and courage to take on a much bigger and seasoned warrior in Goliath. David must first be obedient and move into action before the blessings of God could be applied to David's life. Christian, you may have strength and courage but without application, God cannot bless your life.
- To do is to step out in faith in true obedience to God and His divine promises. Here are some areas in which we can take that step, provided God has called you to move.
- To exhort, rule, give, and show mercy... let them do it (Rom 12:8)
- To strive for masteries through a temperate spirit for an incorruptible crown..... Do It (I Cor 9:25)
- Whatsoever ye do, DO IT heartily, as to the Lord (Colo 3:23)
- DO it unto ALL the Brethren (I Thess 4:10)
- Submission. DO IT with joy (Heb 13:17)
- Minister - DO it as of the ability which God giveth ((I Pet 4:11)
